National insurance contributions for a soldier engaged compulsory military service are paid by the State, as long as the soldier is not employed or self-employed. Up to December 2001, soldiers engaged unpaid military service ("Shalat") were required to pay their own health insurance contributions, but since January 2002 Health Insurance is paid by the State.
