1. You are covered by unemployment insurance

Under the law, you are covered by unemployment insurance if you meet the following three conditions:

  • You are an Israeli resident, or a temporary resident - hold a visa or a temporary residency license;
  • You are 18 years old or over and have not yet reached the age of 67;
  • You are a salaried employee and your employer is obligated to pay insurance contributions for you.

The following workers are covered by unemployment insurance – despite the fact that their employer is not obligated to pay insurance contributions for them – and they pay their own insurance contributions.

  • A salaried employee whose employer is not an Israeli resident;
  • An employee in the diplomatic or consular service of a foreign country.

The following are not covered by unemployment insurance and are not eligible for unemployment benefits:

  • A self-employed person
  • Someone who does not work at all
  • A member of a kibbutz or a member of a cooperative moshav, unless they work as employees outside the cooperative framework, or are employed by the kibbutz
  • The controlling shareholder in a closed corporation, even if he was a salaried employee of the corporation.
