Vocational rehabilitation for disabled persons

Under the Disability Insurance Law, if you belong to one of the following two categories, you are eligible for vocational rehabilitation:

(a) A medical committee has decided to assign you permanent medical disability degree of at least 20%, and you meet the following criteria:

  • Because of the impairment, you cannot work in your previous occupation or in any other kind of suitable work.
  • You require vocational training in order to return to your previous occupation or to do work suited to your skills following the occurrence of the impairment.
  • You are suitable for vocational rehabilitation, and are capable of cooperating in the process of vocational rehabilitation and of integrating into the open job market (as opposed to sheltered or supported work).

(b) you are the spouse of a disabled person that the NII has decided cannot be vocationally rehabilitated, you live on a regular basis with your disabled spouse, an increment to the disabled person’s monthly disability pension is paid on your behalf, and you have  not yet reached retirement age.

Consolidation of a vocational career                

The NII rehabilitation officer will counsel you on selecting a training and employment program after having talked with you and understood your ambitions, skills and limitations. If necessary, the rehabilitation officer will consult with physicians, psychologists and other rehabilitation experts.

In order to help you return to and integrate into the working world, the rehabilitation officer will help you choose a vocation that is in demand in the job market and which you can learn within a defined time period. On completion of the learning and training period, the rehabilitation officer will also help you with job placement, should you require assistance in that area.

                
Submit the claim

A claim for vocational rehabilitation must be submitted to the rehabilitation department in the local branch of the NII nearest your place of residence. In order to file a claim, you must fill out a  form Claim for the Granting Vocational Rehabilitation.

Placement assistance

The NII’s Rehabilitation Division, in cooperation with placement agencies specializing in the integration of disabled persons into the job market, assists in the placement of work-injured disabled persons in the open job market and provides them with support until their integration into their workplace.

A tip regarding vocational training for disabled persons

The success of your vocational rehabilitation does not depend only on us. It requires, first of all, a willingness to make an effort and cooperation on your part. Therefore, it is very important that you study diligently and stay in constant touch with your rehabilitation officer.

Volunteers who help the disabled                

The volunteer service in the NII’s Rehabilitation Division invites you to volunteer on behalf of the disabled in the Hadera, Rehovot, Petah Tikva or Tel Aviv areas.

                
Payment of rehabilitation allowance and additional payments                

 During the period of your vocational training, the NII will make the following payments to you:

      • Rehabilitation allowance
      • Tuition fees, study equipment, stydy devices and tutoring
      • Travel and accommodation expences
