Medical treatment

An insured person who is injured at work (by a work accident or an occupational disease ) is entitled to medical treatment free of charge - for as long as he requires treatment as a result of the injury. In order to obtain the treatment, the employee must provide his health fund with a referral / request for medical treatment form, obtained from his employer. (The self-employed worker will receive this form from the health fund itself.) The type and extent of the medical treatment are determined by the health fund doctor treating the insured person.

Provision of treatment

Medical treatment is provided solely to insured members of a health fund (Clalit Health Services, Leumit Health Fund, Me’uchedet Health Fund and Maccabi Health Fund).

First aid (including the initial hospitalization) is also provided to the insured person by Magen David Adom, a hospital and any doctor near the place of the injury (however, continued treatment is provided at the health funds).

Dental treatment is provided solely by the health funds - payment for private dental care will not be reimbursed.

Referral for medical treatment

Medical treatment is provided at the health fund in which the insured person was a member at the time of the injury. For the purpose of receiving treatment, a salaried employee must provide his health fund with a referral form from his employer to obtain medical treatment for a work injury. An insured person who is self-employed will receive from his health fund, or may download here, the Request to obtain medical treatment. On the basis of the referral form, he will be given a certificate of incapacity due to a work injury.

Extent of medical treatment

The medical treatment includes therapy (x-rays, hospitalization, medications, orthopedic and therapeutic devices and their supply, repair and replacement), and recuperation, as well as medical and occupational rehabilitation.

The insured person is also entitled to reimbursement of travel expenses to and from the treatment location as required, and as specified in the National Insurance Regulations.

Certification of incapacity for work

An insured person who stops working due to his injury receives a medical certificate of incapacity for work from his health fund.

The medical certificates must be submitted together with the claim for an injury allowance to the National Insurance Institute branch in his place of residence as promptly as possible (only the original certificate must be submitted - copies will not be accepted).

The insured person must comply with all the doctor’s instructions regarding the medical treatment. If he does not do so, the National Insurance Institute may deny him the right to a work injury benefit.

Tip regarding work injuries / medical treatment

Therapy expenses are reimbursed by the health fund in which the insured person was treated, after submission of authorization by the National Insurance Institute that the claim for an injury allowance was approved.

Expenses for private medical treatment, including dental treatment, will not be reimbursed.
