To those who meet the conditions and have not yet obtained the grant – the grant will be paid at the next opportunity between late May and early June.
Payment of maintenance benefits is subject to an income test.
Unemployment benefits are considered as income and fully taken into account in income calculation with respect to maintenance benefits. Therefore, it is almost certain that maintenance benefit will be reduced or even canceled during the period of entitlement to unemployment benefits.
We are aware of the difficulty caused by this situation, and have therefore asked the Treasury to rule on unemployment benefits in order to limit their impact on maintenance benefits during this period.
You can check to what extent your unemployment benefit affects the level of maintenance benefits using the maintenance benefit calculator.
For your information, if your right to maintenance payments from the National Insurance Institute is cancelled as a result of receiving unemployment benefit, your right to maintenance ruled by a judgment will not be affected. You will then be able to contact a branch of the Institute to request that the maintenance debtor be compelled to pay under National Insurance Regulations, and obtain approval for the recovery of the differential by enforcement or directly from the obligated person.

Because of the coronavirus crisis, we have reduced the rate of debt compensation on unemployment benefits, in order to leave those obliged with a minimum benefit higher than maintenance, after compensation.
In addition, the National Insurance Institute has suspended maintenance benefit files to be opened with enforcement authorities, against new maintenance debtors (until May 10, 2020), in order to avoid the implementation of collection and enforcement procedures, including seizures against them.
If you are already subject to seizure – you can contact the enforcement authorities to request that this period be taken into account in order to grant a suspension of the seizure order.
It is possible to receive both benefits. However, unemployment benefit will be taken into account when calculating the amount of maintenance owed to you.
The garnt will not be taken into account as income for the month of its payment, and the right to maintenance benefits will therefore not be automatically affected. However, this grant will be accounted for as annual income to which the National Insurance Institute refers when receiving the final assessment for 2020.
