Conditions of entitlement


  1. ​Authorization by the Ministry of Social Affairs to be a foster family.
  2. The child is under 10 years of age.
  3. The foster period is at least 6 months.
  4. Either the father or mother (according to their choice), who worked before taking in a foster child and stopped when they accepted the child, will receive a birth and parenthood allowance for the period in which they did not work.
  5. The female partner must have accumulated a full or partial qualifying period; the male partner must have accumulated a full qualifying period exclusively.

Remark: birth and parenthood allowances will not be paid to more than one family for the same period of time, and the same child.

Working couples may share the birth and parenthood period under the following conditions:

  1. The spouse who has been replaced has returned to work and the leave did not last less than 21 days. The NII must be provided with an authorization from the employer regarding his return to work. Self-employed persons have to send a declaration in that regard.
  2. A birth and parenthood allowance will not be paid to any of the spouses during the same period of time and for the same child.
